Citizen Bike supports Bike to Work Week
March 24th - 29thSouth Florida-based Citizen Bike has partnered with the City of Miami Beach to promote folding bike commuting for Bike to Work Week. Thousands of South Florida commuters use their vehicles daily to and from home and work. With the cost of gasoline rising close to the $4.00 a gallon mark, seeking alternative modes of transportation may soon be on many commuters' to do lists.
The City of Miami Beach invites the community to get out of their cars and participate in Bike to Work Week, March 24 - 28, 2008. Bike to Work Week promotes bicycling as an alternative mode of transportation and recruits individuals as regular folding bicycle commuters. Folding bike commuting has many benefits: health, economical and environmental. For example, riding a folding bike to work rather than a car reduces traffic congestion while limiting the amount of air pollution caused by the combustion of fossil fuels. Folding Bicycle commuters can also save time by combining their work commute with their daily exercise workout.
By riding a folding bike to work, the added health benefits are worth the ride. Economical benefits can also be realized. The annual price of keeping an automobile running is estimated at least $3,000.
In celebration of South Florida Bike to Work Week, the City of Miami Beach will host an event on Wednesday, March 26, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on the south side of Lincoln Road, west of Meridian Avenue. Local agencies will provide information about the benefits of alternative modes of transportation. There will also be opportunities to register bicycles with the Police Department, receive free giveaways, and watch a demonstration from Citizen Bike featuring their folding bikes. A drawing will be held to win a foldable bike.
The City of Miami Beach is committed to providing excellent public service and safety to all who live, work and play in its vibrant, tropical, historic community.
To promote bicycle riding, the City of Miami Beach also holds a free community bike ride for all ages, monthly on the second Saturday (March 8). The two-hour bike ride starts at the Miami Beach Bicycle Center, 601 5th Street at 9:00 a.m. Police provides an escort throughout the entire ride to ensure the bikers safety. Riders are also allowed to ride at their own pace, which makes the ride safe for people of all ages and abilities.
Bike to Work Week was founded in 1956 by the League of American Bicyclists.
